Lover of Light: Bobbi Lane

Great article on Bobbi Lane, from the Powell Tribune, by Ilene Olson:

Bobbi Lane describes herself as a “lover of light.” Her use of light is the essence of her distinguished photography career.

“It’s what you sculpt with, how you set the mood, give the description to your subject,” she said during an interview at Northwest College earlier this month. “When I see certain kinds of light, when it all comes together, I go into another place. I suppose you would call it ‘the zone.’ It gets me very excited.”

When Lane started her photography career, she focused her cameras and aimed light on things: fashions, McDonald’s toys, items in a history museum — even the space station proposal for McDonald Douglas.

She’s photographed space shuttle landings and historic moments and things. Her photography has opened doors for her all around the country, and around the world.

“I’m a junkie for new experiences,” she said. “One of the reasons why I’m a photographer is, it’s always different. It’s never the same. I get to go places, and meet people, see stuff I wouldn’t ever get to do any other way ... Photography is my way to experience the world.”

The Teachable Moment with Arthur Meyerson

Nikon's Learn & Explore section of their web site has a dynamic new feature: The Teachable Moment. They recently spoke with Arthur Meyerson. Here's a snippet from the article:

Arthur makes use of his own images to illustrate ideas he calls "the visual toolbox," ideas that illustrate ways of seeing. "If you're shooting near a body of water, use reflections," he says. "If you're stuck with harsh light casting shadows, use the shadows. Always watch for gestures, for the unexpected moves. Train yourself to look for light and color and really see what they're doing. And realize that they'll be changing, so be ready to keep up."

Why Accept Reality When You Can Change It! with David X. Tejada

If you’re like me, sometimes when I’m out photographing—whether for a client or for myself—I find the scene before me ordinary or boring. Learning how to use your flash properly, and knowing how to employ your color balance, can help you change reality to something extraordinary. Learning to see, and then create, the possibilities of any given scene takes practice.

Let’s take a look at this first image (#1). The scene was captured just as my camera readings suggested. Daylight balanced and properly exposed.

By shifting my white balance to a tungsten setting on the camera and deliberately under exposing the scene, I have a much more dramatic image (#2).

When adding flash to the scene, remember that your flash needs to balance with the white balance you have set on your camera. In this case, by adding a full cut CTO gel on my flash I produce a natural skin tone (#3). Remember: your “key light” color temperature needs to match your color balance on your camera.

Alumni Spotlight: Rosi Calderón

Verve Gallery of Photography has selected Rosi Calderón to exhibit in their Online Emerging Artist Exhibition. This category of submissions allows an emerging artist the opportunity to have their work shown to a larger audience via the internet. View Rosi's online exhibition >>

Rosi, who has been an artist and creator since childhood, is an alumni of the following workshops:

Multimedia Storytelling with Ami Vitale (Santa Fe)
Dancing with the Ambient: Using Small Flashes with David Hobby (San Miguel)
The People and Culture of Colonial Mexico with Ralph Lee Hopkins (San Miguel)

Rosi exhibits her work every year, and has received accolades in publications like Black & White magazine (2009 and 2011) and the special 20th anniversary edition of the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops Calendar in 2009.

Her camera is her partner in the continuous discovery of the unexpected: movement in time, reflection in history, shadows in parallel universes, wind blows in landscapes, wisdom in wrinkles and intensity in sight. Says Rosi, “Each shot gives meaning to my memories; gives faith to the grandiosity of the world and the passage of time; gives admiration to the miracle of living”

Congratulations, Rosi!
