Raul Touzon is a documentary and underwater photographer who specializes in making images that convey what he calls "the eternity of a moment." He has traveled extensively in Latin America, documenting its cultures, and his photographs have appeared in Outdoor Photographer, National Geographic Traveler, and National Geographic Magazine. His images are represented by the National Geographic Image Collection and Getty Images. His website is www.touzonphoto.com
One of Raul's favorite places is Oaxaca, Mexico. He returns this Summer, July 21 - 28th for one of the most colorful festivals around; Guelaguetza, Dance of the Gods. He was kind enough to write a bit about his own experiences in Oaxaca.
Guelaguetza is one of the most wonderful events I have ever photographed. Not only the dances but also the music, the gifts flying through the air (bread and candy), the kindness and generosity of the people and yes...the sweet smell of mezcal. Access is great; you can get close to the dancers, be part of this big feast and obviously shoot a million pictures. Back in the city there are more street dances, fireworks, parades, food, weddings...a plethora of images evolving right before your eyes. I can’t wait to be back this year, is the one event I want to go back to, again and again. And by the way, there are no problems in Oaxaca, it is more beautiful and safe than ever...I promise you. Hope you can join us.
